Why are our Programmes Needed in the Health Care Profession?
It was identified that there were many drivers for aggressive and confrontational behaviour. A few of mention were:
-
Mental health
-
Ill anxious and fearful patients
-
Drug use
The Crime Survey of England & Wales identified health care professionals as the 2nd highest group at risk of assaults and threats (after the protective services such as the police).
Other data tells us:
-
3000 violent patients in England barred from seeing their GPs : Source: BBC.
-
Police are recording an average of 3 violent incidents at general practices every day.
-
In 2021 – 22 there were 1,068 criminal incidents of violence at health centres & surgeries. These are the reported incidents, and the consensus is that the real figures will be much higher.
Dr Chaand Nagpaul (chair of the BMA) – states that GP practices are facing unmanageable levels of demand. Patients are struggling to get appointments because of the national capacity and lack of historic investment. All this is creating patient upset & agitation who are taking their frustrations out on the system.
